Tommy Punches His Tag On His First Kaibab Mule Deer!
 |
|
| Two great bucks for Tommy and his dad - same morning and just 50 yards apart! |
Tommy and his dad dropped 2 nice Kaibab muleys just 50 yards apart on the early rifle hunt.
This was my first big hunt aside from birds. I went up with my stepdad and 2 others who also had tags in 12A. We set up camp the 1st day then set out the second day. We drove all over and after an hour or so began to hunt on foot. We hunted all day with no luck and headed back to camp for some much needed R&R.
The next day we got up before sunrise ate and decided to drive just up the road a little ways from camp to a meadow where the day before we had seen deer, but missed our opportunity. We sat out in the meadow near the trees and waited it out, trying not to freeze as it was only 19 F. After about 45 min we decided to split up so we could cover more ground. Right away we saw two bucks fighting in the meadow just 200 ft south of us. My dad said come with me boy and we'll head into the trees and try and get behind them. I remember running up that hill as fast as I could trying to keep up, It was hard but the excitement helped as fuel. By the time we reached the top I coulda passed out, but I slowly followed my pops and we might of scared em out a bit. Because we saw 4 cows running through the trees and we ran after. Just after 30 feet or so we saw 2 bucks run by about 200 plus yards away, I hesitated thinkin it was too far. But my dad shot and nailed him. We then began searching for him and after we found a blood trail we found him about 100 yards or so from that already dead. My dad sat down and began guttin, I sat down about 6 feet away and told him I had to eat somethin since I had skipped breakfast. My dad asked me to help and I walked over to assist, without my gun, he told me to get my gun and always keep it with me. Just then I looked up and saw 3 bucks about 50 yards away, my dad yelled Shoot Tommy Shoot! So I took aim and shot him in the neck, broke his neck and he dropped right there and ran over to my dad and we jumped up and down cheering. I've never felt a feeling like that it was amazing! So we ran over to him and saw he was done and he died a couple mins later. We finished up guttin his dear and began on mine. I was so nervous and excited while I was guttin him I accidently cut my dad's hand and my own. It was still the best feeling in life and I took home my 4X3 Buck!
"Thanks for your great story and pictures Tommy - those are 2 great Kaibab bucks for you and your dad! Gives those early tag holders something to look forward to."
